On Sunday 26th of September 2010, the Tema International School (TIS) class of 2011 embarked on a journey to Deveme, a small village in the Eastern Region of Ghana as a part of their Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) project which is embedded in the IB Diploma program. Preparations for the journey began weeks earlier when our CAS coordinator, Mrs. Surama King, informed us we will be undertaking a CAS project which involved travelling to a village to attend to the needy. Immediately, our hopes were raised high as we became aware that we were being given an opportunity to possibly change the lives of people.
Without delay, we were put into Committees and each Committee brought up activities that they were to undertake at Deveme. We received donations from teachers, students, parents and sponsors in cash and kind. Soon the D-day arrived and with profuse excitement, we left the premises of TIS to Deveme.
When we arrived at Deveme, we were welcomed by the students of the school and other members of the community. We immediately got to work; the food Committee set out to cook with some women from Deveme, the Arts Therapy Committee started out with a set of students in class 2 and the children were allowed to express themselves through painting, the Educational Committee dispersed to various classes to teach the children, the Motivational Committee sat with the dedicated teachers of Deveme to interact with them and to encourage them to keep up with their good work . The other Committees also went on with their activities.
After the first session, we dewormed the entire school and the Hygiene committee talked to the teenagers explaining the various ways by which one has to practice personal hygiene. There was a heated and exciting soccer match between the students of TIS and the skilled students of Deveme. The most exciting part for the children of Deveme was the entertainment session which was led by the Entertainment committee.
After lunch, we moved onto the climax of the events, the donations. TIS, on behalf of Safina Water, Kojack Pharmacy, Moiselle, ANJ Eletronics, Brazil Agrobusiness, Image Consortium, parents and others donated drinking water, clothes, money, dewormers, First Aid boxes, toilettes, furniture including others to the people of Deveme. In turn, we also received donations of foodstuff that had been grown by Deveme farmers as a token of their appreciation. The activity was wound up with a tour of Deveme.
Our interaction with these children made us feel blessed that we had the opportunity to affect their lives in a positive way. Through the experience, we learnt to appreciate more what we had and we were inspired by the smiles we saw on their faces as we interacted with them. We have been motivated and we hope to visit Deveme once again and to impact the lives of many more people in the community.
“We must become the change we want to see.” This quote by Mahatma Gandhi is what we reflect on as we live our daily lives. Through teamwork, we HAVE and we WILL make a change in the universe!
